Break the Divide: Bring on Unity

Break the Divide: Bring on Unity

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.” – Martin Luther King

Society loves to label our generation, categorise and confine us to a certain ‘crowd’, shaping us to fit a particular exterior.
Our schools are a classic example of the division between young people. We’re all equal - all likely to face the same day-to-day struggles.

But why is there a great divide separating us, a division which can leave us feeling inferior to others?

Don’t get me wrong, we all have our common interests, like, when girls gather to talk about the latest beauty treatment and weather it works? Then you get the girls who’d rather kick a ball about, and that’s okay!
It’s amazing that we can have such a diverse community. However, when it gets to the point where unity is a thing of the past and back-stabbing and division is where we’re at; something has to change.

Let’s shake society up a bit.

Who says we have to abide by the ‘status-quo?’

Wouldn’t it be incredible to see the ‘jocks’ sitting alongside the ‘drama chicks?’ All united for one cause, regardless of social class or superficial classifications.
Why judge someone on how much money they have, what they wear or even what they look like? There’s so much more to a person then their outward appearance. We love our best friend for their inner qualities: how funny they are, and the way they are always there for us. So then, why do we find ourselves allowing outward exterior to determine our analysis of a person? We can all learn from each other just by being around people from various walks of life.
There’s no reason why two people from completely different backgrounds, different circumstances and that perhaps even share different interests can’t get along!

So many of us are desperate for acceptance that we would compromise ourselves, changing and becoming people we hardly even recognise.
Why do we allow ourselves to conform to an image?

For popularity?

Acceptance? to feel as if we belong?

Don’t detract from who you are ‘cause its easier to be someone else.
In the new season of Britain’s Next Top Model, we see one of the girls take a stand for what she believes in, unwilling to lose herself to please others.
If we adopt such a mentality, we will create stronger personalities and freedom will be instilled within us. Let’s not be subjected to that category or stuck to that label; but in fact lets be ourselves.

As teenagers, exploring different social groups is completely natural as we develop our own personal characters. Treat it as a learning process in which you can define your character, but never lose yourself as a price; take a stand for what you believe in.
Think you’ll be rated for being a clone of someone else? Trust me, people will rate you for being your own person.

Imagine a group of individuals all recognised for their individuality; coming together to just simply be. All petty divisions forgotten and a chance to experience the full essence of living in harmony.
This will ultimately influence our world, empower us with the broad knowledge to impact others and provide us with the change that we so desperately need.

We CAN revolutionise OUR schools, OUR communities- OUR world.

Collectively we are unstoppable. Together we are the solution.
