In May 2009, one of our Sixth Form students, Jasvin Singh applied to have the opportunity to attend a two day “BBC Interview Masterclass” course. Jasvin`s application was successful and she spent two days at Westminster learning interview techniques from professionals from the BBC. After the training, Jasvin went to the Houses of Parliament where she interviewed Mike Foster, the Secretary under State for the Department for International Development (DFID). This was filmed professionally and is now used as a resource for teachers and students in schools across the country to raise the issue of Global Child Poverty.
Hatch End High School is now a member of the Global Student Forum (GSF), funded by the DFID. GSF aims to raise the issues of Global Child Poverty to Sixth Form students, so they can then become peer educators in their schools. On 30th June, 2009 we took 17 Sixth Form students to the GSF annual Conference. This was a fantastic opportunity for them to learn about the issues by asking Members of Parliament questions, listen to Hip Hop artists perform live music and meet people who have been affected by child poverty in developing countries. At the conference, 655 Sixth Form Students watched the film created by Jasvin interviewing Mike Foster, which was well received by the audience. In the afternoon our students attended workshops on how they could raise some of the issues at their school and deliver assemblies/citizenship lessons.
This was a really exciting event which the students found very informative. They are now starting to plan the workshops they will be delivering to the rest of the school on how to raise some of the issues discussed at the conference.
