I've been thinking about 2010 a lot recently and the fact that we are coming to the end of January already. Another 8 days to go and in comes February. New Year’s Resolutions seem long gone, and if you’re anything like me . . . Goal: Get more organized. 23 days into the new year and how am I doing...? Results: Already broken - several times!
The New Year comes in and we are so excited and hopeful that this will be better than the last. I was reading through the most common New Year’s Resolutions that young people make and here is what I came across. . .
Be happy,
Loose weight,
Respect my parents,
Get better grades
Perhaps you made one or more of the above resolutions and like me; you have already broken them several times over the last few weeks. But you know what, everyday is a new beginning, it's a fresh day where you can always start again, and you don’t have to wait till the following year to start. Just because you set out to respect your parents or get better grades and the next day went completely the opposite direction doesn’t mean you are a failure and are incapable of achieving that goal. I’ve heard it said so many times that the decisions you make today affect what your life will look like a week, a month and years from now.
Pick back up that 'goal' or that 'New Year’s Resolution' you made at the beginning of the year and if you need to pick it back up every day or every few days then do so. And keep in mind this . . . . Tomorrow is a brand new day, in fact every hour is brand new.
Whatever goal or dreams you have, no matter how small or big they may seem . . . they are important, because they are important to YOU, and you are important.
Yesterday is gone, tomorrow is not here yet, but you have something, and that something is . . . TODAY.
You want to get better grades? Start by paying attention in class and studying more when you get home, you want to respect your parents? Why not start by thinking positive thoughts about them and being thankful that you have a parent and a home when others are homeless, on the streets here and around the world. You want to have healthy relationships? Start by taking a good look at who you are close to, people you call your best friends? Are they bringing the best out of you? Encouraging you through tough times?
Maybe you have dreams of being a singer, an actress, a teacher, or perhaps you want to own your own business one day, be a prime minister or a president, and you’re at the stage where you think it’s 'only a dream' and impossible to achieve, so you have given up.
Rise back up.
Its only 23 days into January, you have so many 'new' days ahead of you, days that could potentially be life changing, filled with countless opportunities if only you would take on the journey. Pick up that dream, start believing and having faith that it could one day be a reality. Write your goals down and you will discover that there is much more in you than you realized.
I read a really cool story about a young 13 year old boy from India called Akrit Jaswal, who developed a passion for science and anatomy at an early age. The Doctor at the local hospital noticed this about him and allowed him to observe surgeries when he was only 6years old. He was so inspired by what he saw that he begun to read everything on the subject. A family heard about his abilities and asked him if he could operate on their daughter for free and guess what? The surgery was a success (True Story). Akrit is the youngest student to attend university in India. Whilst growing up he was exposed to cancer patients lying on road sides due to the fact that they could not afford treatment. Because of this, Akrit wants to use his medical intellect to find a cure for cancer. His passion for medicine comes from his passion about cancer. He is making a difference and has been on the Oprah Winfrey show because of this.
His story is just an example of a young guy who set a goal and is on a journey to achieving it. You too can achieve your goals, whatever they are. You are so much more than you think, and you are capable of more than you believe.
If you can dream it, you can achieve it.
And what’s better than having a goal that can help others.
Meanwhile, I am also going to pick up my goal of being more organized and weather it’s every few days or every month when I need to be organized I will pick it back up and together we can keep going and hopefully as time goes on, we will get better at it, than we are today, and who knows what will become of our goals this time next year . . .
